Mission Statement:

The charge of the New York Conference on the Caribbean Community is to abet bilateral relations between the United States of America and CARICOM. The Conference aims to facilitate the development of an enabling environment for dialogue between the Diaspora and the Leaders of CARICOM.

BACKGROUND

At the Twenty-Eighth Meeting of the Conference which was held in Barbados in July 2007, Heads of Government met with Congressman Charles Rangel, Chairman of the Committee on Ways and Means, US House of Representatives and engaged in an exchange of views on a number of issues of interest to the Caribbean Community.

An invitation was extended by Congressman Rangel to CARICOM Heads of Government for them to visit New York and it was proposed that the visit take place in June 2008 to coincide with Caribbean American Heritage Month. A proposal was also made at that meeting that a Conference on the Caribbean be held in New York as part of this visit.

The CARICOM Consular Corps in New York, in collaboration with the CARICOM Caucus of Ambassadors in Washington, D.C., and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, has been working on the preparation for the event entitled “New York Conference on the Caribbean”.

The various fora will focus on -

(i) Education;

(ii) Trade and Investment; and

(iii) the Diaspora.

In addition to Congressman Rangel, support for the Conference has come from the Mayor of the City of New York; the President of the Brooklyn Borough; Medgar Evers College; York College; the Harlem Chamber of Commerce; the New York City Partnership; and Carib News.
