Regional Centre for the Education and Training of Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health Assistants (REPAHA) |
| |
In order to support that concept of the livestock industry, a Regional Educational Programme for Animal Health Assistants (REPAHA) was established, in 1975 in Guyana, to train animal health and veterinary public health assistants - who were in short supply.
The Programme, which ended in August 2002, produced over 400 skilled Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health Assistants and issued a number of Diplomas for Graduates in Livestock Production and Management. It also offered short-term Certificate courses in various fields specific to agriculture and produced 100 trained graduates in these areas.
After 27 years of operation, the Programme had significantly met the need for which it was established. Declining enrolment over the last several years combined with funding difficulties resulted in the decision by Heads of Government, at their Thirteenth Inter-Sessional Meeting (2002, Belize City) to end the Programme.
Some of the programmes offered by REPAHA have been incorporated into the curriculum of the Guyana School of Agriculture.
