GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT SUB-PROGRAMME - caricom advocate for gender justice
 
History: The foundations for this project lay in the decisions from Meetings of Bureaux of Gender/Women’s Affairs and the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD).

Project aim: The establishment of an Office of the Special Advocate against GBV seeks to develop a more coordinated and integrated approach to reducing Gender Based Violence (GBV) in the CARICOM region.

Mandate of the Advocate: The CARICOM Advocate for Gender Justice will be required to:

• coordinate the research on GBV within the CARICOM Region

• raise awareness of the need for further action to develop and strengthen integrated responses which address all social and legal sectors for the purposes of protection, provision of services; justice; and prevention.

Financial support: Funded under the CARICOM / Spain Cooperation Agreement

Proposed thematic report: Youth, Masculinity and Violence

Location of the Advocate: Barbados

Commencement date and Period of execution: 12 months in the first instance starting 2nd March 2010

Management structure: The Working Group on GBV already established and functioning will provide oversight to the project while a technical advisory panel comprising of experts in the area of gender and development and masculinity studies will be established to support the Advocate and consultants in their work on “Youth, Masculinity and Violence”.

Partners:

• National: Bureaux of Women’s/Gender Affairs, health, education justice and security, Central Statistical Offices, other relevant and competent authorities, and NGOs in CARICOM Member States

• Regional: with regional NGOs such as CAFRA, DAWN Caribbean

• International: UN agencies through the Working Group on Gender based Violence

LAUNCH OF THE OFFICE OF THE CARICOM ADVOCATE FOR GENDER JUSTICE

The Launch of the Office of the CARICOM Advocate for Gender Justice took place on International Women’s Day, 8th March 2010 at the CARICOM Headquarters in Georgetown.

Dr. Rosina Wiltshire was formally introduced as the First CARICOM Advocate for Gender Justice. She was appointed one year, in the first instance.
