STATEMENT BY THE CHAIRMAN OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), HON. TILLMAN THOMAS, PRIME MINISTER OF GRENADA, ON HONDURAS

The Caribbean Community welcomes the signing of the Agreement for National Reconciliation and Democratic Consolidation in the Republic of Honduras between President Porfirio Lobo of Honduras and that country’s former President Manuel Zelaya in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia on 22 May 2011.

The Caribbean Community congratulates all the parties and actors involved in brokering this agreement which has led to the peaceful resolution of this conflict and establishes the conditions for the reintegration of Honduras into the Organization of American States (OAS) and all its bodies.

The signing of this important agreement ushers in a new chapter in the democratic process in Honduras. The Caribbean Community looks forward to the continued strengthening of democratic principles by the Government of Honduras as enshrined in the Inter-American Democratic Charter and to its future participation in the OAS and its organs.
