Nationals of Trinidad and Tobago who won places in the CARICOM Energy Month Photography and Art and Video competitions, received their prizes earlier this week.

The prizes were presented to the winners at a simple ceremony held at the Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, Trinidad and Tobago.

Candice Sobers and Seon Thompson, both of Trinidad and Tobago placed second, and third, respectively, in the Photo and Art Competition, and won US$2000 and US$1000, respectively. Guyanese Keron Bruce won the US$3000 first prize.

In the Amateur Category of the Photo and Art Competition, Donna Berment won first place, Debra Thomas, second and Nirvana Jones- Armour, third. The video competition winners were Fidel Iwueke, first place, and Camryn Bruno – who could not attend the ceremony – second place.

CARICOM Energy Month is held each year in November. Entrants to the competitions were invited to submit their online digital photographs or scans of artwork, and in the video category online creative videos or animations highlighting how the people of the CARICOM Region can achieve Sustainable Development through the use of Sustainable Energy. The competition was open to all CARICOM citizens under two (2) categories – amateurs and professionals.

The GIZ REETA Programme funded the prizes for the Amateur Category of the Photo and Art Competition, as well as the prizes for the Video Competition, while the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) funded the cash prizes.

Ms. Anita Hankey, who delivered remarks at the prize-giving ceremony on behalf of the Hon. Franklin Khan, Minister of Energy and Energy Industries of Trinidad and Tobago, extended congratulations to the winners. She said they brought pride to Trinidad and Tobago with their achievements.

Ms. Hankey, who is the Senior Planning Officer, Ministry of Energy and Energy Industries, gave an overview of the activities that were held in Trinidad and Tobago to mark CARICOM Energy Month last November – a social media and video competition, a radio competition and a renewable energy and energy efficiency youth forum.

“As CARICOM’s leading producer of crude oil and natural gas, and the Region’s only net exporter of natural gas, we have been afforded low electricity and gas prices. However, this same reason is why, now, more than ever, especially in light of low global energy prices, which have contributed to our economic hardships, it is especially important for us in Trinidad and Tobago to vigorously continue to sensitize our public to the importance of energy efficiency, reducing wastage, and adopting sustainable habits in all that we do,” she said.
